Bottom line is to incrementally changed American in foundational institutions like schools (of course media, businesses, mental and physical health institutions were also key). Children were led to believe there is no absolutes and why they taught that 2+2 can equal 5. Learning to explain and believe in lies were more acceptable than getting the right results. The planners also took over the teaching colleges and taught the teachers this was the better, smarter way. Through organised lying, facts are gradually downgraded to mere matters of opinion. Reading Arendt, it becomes even clearer how the current concept of “alternative facts” is instrumental to achieve inflation of facts. According to Arendt, once disinformation from those in power succeeds, it gives the organised liar three abilities. First, to say things and then claim they never did. Second, to rewrite history in order to serve their interests. Third, to call specific groups (minorities, political rivals) a threat, without the need to back it up by evidence. As the fragility of factual truth is not something that can ever be remedied permanently, modern democracies have to live with this inherent insecurity. All this speaks to the enormous importance of public institutions such as libraries, museums, universities, courts and newspapers. These are places where facts are conserved and the public record is maintained. Without them, we would lose an important pillar protecting factual truth. The Advantage of the Lie Why do lies have an impact in the public space? One answer is that it is because truth is often unclear, unstable. People prefer stories that remove their uncertainty. When COVID-19 struck the world a year ago, as people fear change, some really wanted to believe this was nothing serious. Disinformation actors exploited this. In the same period, other narratives did acknowledge the dangers, but subsequently explained them in terms of already existing beliefs; like the threat from global elites, evil billionaires, or China. Hannah Arendt explained this phenomenon in 1971 in another topical essay, Lying in Politics(opens in a new tab): “It is this fragility that makes deception so very easy up to a point, and so tempting. It never comes into a conflict with reason, because things could indeed have been as the liar maintains they were. Lies are often much more plausible, more appealing to reason, than reality, since the liar has the great advantage of knowing beforehand what the audience wishes or expects to hear. He has prepared his story for public consumption with a careful eye to making it credible, whereas reality has the disconcerting habit of confronting us with the unexpected, for which we were not prepared.” When it comes to the dangers of disinformation for society, Hannah Arendt is still an absolute authority. I'm also on the executive counsel of the Alabama Library Association. First, the legislation, as it's written, affords no process to due or otherwise to the accused. There's no investigation of criminal wrongdoing or even an evaluation of the legitimacy of any claim that material is or isn't obscene. On top of that, anyone can submit a claim, even if they don't have a library card, even if they don't live in that county, even if they don't live in Alabama. This creates an undue burden on libraries, not to mention an undue burden on our local district attorneys who would be required to prosecute these accusations. Second, the legislation short circuits the policies and procedures that libraries already have in place. In most cases, this includes a materials reconsideration process through which patrons can formally express concerns about what they deem objectionable. As Professionals, we take this process very seriously. In fact, in Dothan, we've invested $20 ,000, the equivalent there of a staff time to evaluate these. We take great efforts to minimize our own concerns, biases and avoid any knee -jerk reactions or blanket decisions. Third, libraries already have trained, educated, experienced, thoughtful, caring and community -minded employees who work tirelessly to ensure that our collections reflect the interests, values, and lived experiences of all of our taxpayers. Our collections may include titles that are sexually explicit or that are related to sexuality or gender, but to claim that we have obscene materials or even pornography is offensive at best and dangerous at worst. Fourth and finally, this bill would subject our city's counties and public libraries to a deluge of litigation, which would result in taxpayer dollars being spent to pay attorneys and settle lawsuits. That's money that cities can't use to pay police officers and teachers, money that counties can't use to pay broken roads or repair bridges, and money that public libraries can't use for summer readings, STEM kits, and classroom outreach activities. For these reasons I urge you to vote against (server went down so you could not hear rest of his words). Summary--are children expendable when adult librarians could face penalties? If they are innocent surely they should not suffer but if guilty -- then they should be held accountable and the Libraries also. Hope HB385 will not be watered down as there are warning signs when minds of children are being turned to destroy the nation.The above picture paints a thousand words...Grandpa fighting to protect the little one vs Professional who can not understand that they are harming young people. The three reconsideration forms are of books that he sees fit to keep in the Library. Someone has said you do not keep trash in the house and those that protect it does not seem to have God's moral values in mind.  Legislators-Tools For Evil or GoodThe picture above tells it all. There are consequences to children being misled. The little things that seemed unimportant to many today such as what is being taught little kids in Elementary School, MIddle School and on to High School and in our Libraries will have huge consequences. The picture is very troubling and it is because of a minority that is very loud, vigilant and zealous. But can you imagine if these examples are a sign of what is to come when more than half the majority thinks like they do? It is important to be involved in politics. It almost seems ungrateful to God and to those who died for us to be free-- to not be informed and involved, as our government is a result of their blood, sweat and tears. Through it we can help open blessings or curses. Evil ways that are not stopped such as promotion of addictions like fentanyl, gambling and sex addictions (and the sexualization of young people) will lead to a demoralized society where anything goes and is ok...such as what we are seeing in the above picture. Please do not be a part of letting more people fall into sin. Your action or inaction makes a difference.
